Land bill tabled in Lok Sabha Aug 29, 4:20 PM The Lok Sabha is now discussing the Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Rehabilitation Bill. The Bill was tabled by Minister of Rural Development Jairam Ramesh. Initiating the discussion, BJP leader Rajnath Singh said the present Bill suffers from many infirmities which need to be addressed. He said no land should be acquired without the consent of the farmers. The BJP leader accused the government of making way for land acquisition to help private entrepreneurs. Describing the Bill as a landmark legislation, Meenakshi Natarajan of Congress said that it provides for acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation in a transparent manner. She said the Bill protects the interest of all stake holders including the son of the soil whose livelihood is dependent on land. Mulayam Singh Yadav of Samajwadi Party advocated the conservation of farmers’ agricultural land. He said only infertile and barren lands should be acquired. Earlier, moving the Bill, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said that it aims at a transparent process for land acquisition for industrialisation and development of essential infrastructural facilities by giving adequate compensation to the affected people.
