Land update: Im currently figuring out the best way to power - TopicsExpress

Land update: Im currently figuring out the best way to power the new land/farm/artist residency project Im embarking upon. For the past decade Ive been thinking to myself. Screw the power companies. I cant wait to get off the grid and have a solar powered system. Regain that independence, you know? Funny how once the investigation begins, its possible to go full circle. What is seeming to be the best possible solution and the solution that considers the earth, other humans, as well as oneself is a grid tied solar powered system. The grid is not going anywhere. And actually, its quite an effective system that has a massively elaborate infrastructure currently in place. The problem with a closed system, as I see it is 2 fold. One, you need to purchase giant batteries. My understanding is that it takes a ton of energy and resources to create batteries. When you have a grid tied system, you dont need batteries. There is already a power system set up all over the country just waiting to be tapped into. Two, if you generate more power than you need, where does that power go? You might be able to store it if you have large enough batteries, but my understanding is that it often can be totally wasted. I think its totally rad to be able to generate more power than you need, tap into the grid, and pass along the excess power to a neighbor or someone else in need. Also when you are powering via solar panels, you are reducing the need of large scale electrical companies to burn coal, natural gas, etc which is always a good thing. I dont claim to be an expert, and Im sure a lot of you out there know more than I do about this. Please share your thoughts, ideas, and feel free to let me know if Im on or off track as for the most conscious way to generate power! Cheers! Polish
