Large-scale ethnic cleansing, resettlement under way; former regime officials Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, #Damascus, 22-11-2013: Former regime security officials who defected have reported that hundreds of thousands more Iranian Shiites are being given Syrian citizenship as part of a coordinated plan by the Assad and Iranian regimes to redraw the demographic map of Syria, with large numbers of properties belonging to Sunni residents who fled to escape Assads war reportedly already confiscated and reoccupied by these newly naturalised foreign Shiites, particularly in Homs and Hama provinces. Reports of Iranian, Iraqi, Lebanese and Yemeni Shiites being quickly given Syrian citizenship and moving into homes in the predominantly Sunni areas ethnically cleansed by the Assad regime and its accomplices (Syria is predominantly Sunni) have been widespread since early 2012, with the registry office in Homs, where all land ownership documents for the city and region were stored, being burnt down by shabiha (pro-regime paramilitaries) last year. Since the records had not been computerised, this means that the regional home and land ownership documents were destroyed in the blaze. Revolutionary organisations have urged home owners from those areas who fled to escape regime bombardment, becoming either refugees or internally displaced, to keep any documentation in their possession safe so as to prove ownership after the revolution. Residents of the besieged Al Waer neighbourhood of Homs city have recently reported the presence of large numbers of Iranian forces there, adding that many appear to have settled their families in the town and expressing concern that they intend to resettle all the besieged areas once they have ethnically cleansed them, as has already happened in a number of towns and villages in the province. This massive displacement and enforced exile of Sunni Muslims is happening in a number of areas across Syria, with a number of majority-Christian villages in Damascus province also being cleansed of their Sunni residents by Assads forces and their Iranian accomplices and proxies. This policy is believed to serve two purposes for the Iranian leadership and the Assad regime, both creating a future Shiite statelet within Syria, comprising the provinces of Homs, Hama and Latakia and a swathe of Damascus province, including much of the capital itself (as has been reported by various credible sources, including regime insiders, for some time), and fomenting sectarian division among Syrians and Syrian-Palestinians of all faiths, who have coexisted for millennia, as a divide and rule tactic.
