Larken Rose 1 hr · Edited · A very common refrain among statists is that, if we didnt have government around to protect us, some OTHER gang of armed thugs might spring up and boss us around and take our stuff! First of all, how funny is it that their worst case scenario is that anarchy might lead to... having government again? We cant do away with X because we might end up with X! Um, okay. But statists who make such dire warnings also always miss the hugely important factor which is the mentality and perceptions of the VICTIMS of extortion. Right now, millions of people are PROUD to be forcibly subjugated and robbed. They call it being a law-abiding taxpayer. That is the ONLY reason that a group of about 100,000 bureaucrats (the IRS), only about 2,000 of whom are even armed, can continually rob a couple HUNDRED MILLION Americans every year (tens of millions of THEM armed), to the tune of TRILLIONS of dollars every year. Any gang which tried to pull that off with those resources, but WITHOUT their victims imagining them to be authority, would be fish food within the week. Statists seem to imagine a never-ending supply of heartless mercenaries who would not only have no moral qualms about committing violent extortion, but also wouldnt have the sense to be scared of trying to rob what (as far as I can tell) is the most heavily armed population in the history of the world. Really? Some PRIVATE gang is going to control 100,000,000 armed Americans through brute force alone? Nice freaking joke. But aside from their cluelessness about human nature, statists also completely misunderstand basic economics. To maintain a gang of thousands of thieving mercenaries you need a really big, steady stream of loot. Right now government gets that by the VICTIMS proudly robbing THEMSELVES. Not only do tens of millions of people fill out stupid, complicated forms and send in money, without anyone directly threatening them, but most EMPLOYERS cooperate in the robbery of all the people who work for them. Because gee, its the law! And we cant go against the LAW, Dorothy! (Auntie Emm was a freaking collaborator!) Again, there is ONE gang capable of subjugating and perpetually robbing the American people, and it is the gang already doing it. And it can do it only because it has duped its victims into imagining legitimacy to the theft, into imagining its extortionistic demands to be taxes, and into imagining that NOT being robbed is a crime. How ironic that millions of devout statists vehemently DEMAND to have the ONLY gang which could pull off such a robbery (government), out of fear that some OTHER gang--which would never be able to pull it off in a million years--might do the same thing. Such is the lunacy inherent in statism. P.S. If you havent yet read The Most Dangerous Superstition, do.
