Larlee Creek SOME SECRETS OF THE STONES I am a dead man! he exclaimed - and then he was FOR such a tiny church no longer used as one for many decades now, LARLEE CREEK certainly has a vast, pretty and well-tended graveyard around it. And its stones have stories to tell. Tucked away in the farthest corner, almost hidden by the shrubs and trees, is the grave of JOHN T TUTHILL, who died in 1911. He was a soldier of the American Civil War. Far more prominent and right out front, a big monument of expensive pink granite says that a young man from here HERBERT LOVELY was killed at Palmer, Washington, on April 17, 1901. It doesnt say how and theres no easy way to find out. But obviously the loss was very heavy for his family as the poem below his name and the monument itself spell out. A lesser stone says ELIZABETH CRAIG died on the first day of spring 1860, aged 59, 16 years after the death of her teenage boy. DANIEL JOHNSONs exhaustive study of old newspapers is silent about her. But not about the boy. Citing a Fredericton newspaper from the following month it says, As Daniel CRAIG, Perth parish (Victoria Co.), age 19, was engaged rolling logs down a brow on 17th ult., one of them struck him on the leg and ground it to pieces. He only survived about 16 hours after the accident. Another tombstone says AMOS LARLEE died July 24, 1864 when he was only 41. Online it takes seconds to discover the man did not die nicely: We learn with regret that Amos LARLEE of Tobique (Victoria Co.) died under the most painful circumstances on Tuesday last. He had gone to a neighbours, Mr. McNEALs and was looking at a bull owned by Mr. McN., and took hold of the animals horns, although advised not to do so, as the creature was known to be ferocious. The bull immediately gored Mr. LARLEE three times and he fell exclaiming I am a dead man and immediately ceased to breathe. - Carleton Sentinel.NB COURIER, Aug 6. 1844 The monuments have little stories to tell.
