Las Vegas might kick off 2015 a little “cooler” than usual. According to meteorologists, there is a 70% chance of snow along with an expected 32-degree low for Las Vegas and surrounding areas on New Year’s Eve. Although a snow-covered Strip may be a pretty sight, it may also mean dangerous driving conditions. Temperatures at or just above 32 degrees can turn a thin layer of water on roads into a slippery disaster. The best advice for driving on bad winter weather is to avoid doing it altogether if possible. But if you have to hit the road during icy conditions, be sure to follow these guidelines to reduce the risk of an accident: - Make sure your vehicle is ready to handle the elements. Before each trip, inspect your tires, battery, windshield wipers, brakes & antifreeze levels. - Snow is an obvious driving hazard, but BLACK ICE is an invisible threat. Keep an eye out for pavement that is slightly darker and duller looking. - Leave at least 3 times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you. About 3 car lengths is ideal. - If the back of your vehicle starts to skid, don’t panic! Take your foot off the accelerator and steer in the direction you want your vehicle to go. - If you have standard brakes, pump them gently. For anti-lock brakes, apply slow steady pressure. - Watch the video below for more tips on how to be a safer driver during icy conditions. youtu.be/IPjbfa891nc
