Lascar Volcano – Chile The Lascar Volcano is one of the most attractive volcanoes in Chile. It is located in the II Region of Antofagasta, 70 km southeast of the town of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, next to the Toconao village. It has a height of 5.592 MASL. The Láscar Volcano with its permanent fumarole is seen from San Pedro de Atacama. It is located in the high plateau surrounded of other impressive hills and volcanoes such as Corona, the Tumisa Hill and the Lejía hill. This volcano is one of the most active in Chile, with an enormous and deep crater and strong volcanic exhalations. Agencies in San Pedro de Atacama offer the climbing up as part of a one day tour to the mountain range. It is possible to climb during the whole year. Nevertheless, between December and February is the high plateau winter (Bolivian) and it is possible to face rains and electrical thunderstorms, which makes the ascent difficult. In the winter the climate is more stable, but the cold is intense and with the wind, which covers the whole year, the thermal sensation is quite low. Its last big eruption was between April the 18th and 26th, 1993 which appears as the third biggest in the history of Chile. In that occasion the volcanic activity lasted one and a half day, where the ashes got to the north of Argentina and the wind dragged them even up to the coast of Brazil. On April the 18th, 2006, the volcano initiated a new eruptive stage detected by the Seismographic Service of the University of Chile. The smoke column rose to more than 3.000 meters height. How to get to the Lascar Volcano From San Pedro de Atacama the route towards the Lascar Volcano takes 4 hours to the top, for it it’s possible to take a tour in San Pedro or to hire a car. When exiting San Pedro towards the south you get to Toconao (33 km). Then, towards the south, you continue by a paved road, following a detour towards a road to Talabre (village located at the feet of the volcano) in direction towards the mountain range. The road goes in constant ascent until a left detour point: it is necessary to continue without taking the detour. Then the road goes down to a gorge where Tumbre is located (3850m, the last inhabited place if you follow the road towards the border with Argentina), an area with rock constructions suitable to camp and protected from the wind. After crossing a creek towards the south, up the gorge and continue the ancient road that leads to the border, passing the west side of the Volcano in direction to the south. After some kilometers and on a very rough road, you reach the Lejía Lagoon. You will have to take detour towards the left before getting there. From there follow the traces that lead towards the Volcano, a flat and even road. You will have to continue the traces carefully since there are other detours towards right that lead to Pili, which is surrounded with mined fields. Following this road you will get to the feet of the Lascar Volcano. waytogochile/blog/lascar-volcano/ waytogochile/ #Tourism #Travel #Chile #Volcanoes
