Laser injuries a threat to workers, OSHA says Lasers present a significant danger to construction and medical workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Monday. OSHA is looking to prevent lasers from causing workplace injuries. The workers who face the greatest risk are in industrial, construction, medical, and research occupations, the agency noted. “Workers unprotected from laser exposure can suffer serious eye and skin injuries including permanent blindness and tissue damage,” said assistant labor secretary David Michaels. “We will continue to work together to produce valuable safety and health information and training to protect workers using laser technology.” OSHA is announcing a renewed focus on preventing workplace laser injuries. The agency is teaming with the Laser Institute of America to offer training programs and guidance for industry on how to avoid these injuries. The agency says it will present the training materials at industry safety conferences and exhibits. Laser safety has been an on-going concern for OSHA. Previously, OSHA released fact sheets about the dangers of lasers in the workplace and issued guidance aimed at helping the medical industry develop a laser safety plan.
