Last Chance to Ride the Summer Wave at MOAH This summer, the Lancaster Museum of Art & History (MOAH) is exhibiting artists who promote the imagery, music, fashion and self-expression of the California surf culture. From iconic surf artists to modern-day pioneers, this timeless, colorful and fun exhibit celebrates 50 years of summer fun under the California sun, appealing to both the young and young at heart. The Spirit of Summer exhibit will be on display through the end of August, so MOAH is inviting the public to surf the wave of fun and enjoy the exhilarating exhibitions before they ride off into the California summer sunset. Showcased in the main gallery is Herbie Fletcher, a globally renowned surf legend and inventor whose works embody the excitement and spirit of summertime. Selections include Fletcher’s signature artwork as well as pieces from his personal collection, including vintage surfboards, photographs and historic film footage. For many Californians and visitors alike, summertime in California means many hours spent relaxing on the beach, a pastime captured by southern California photographers Douglas McCulloh and Jacques Garnier, presented in the Wells Fargo Gallery. The playful aspect of summer is showcased in the Vault Gallery which features Thumperdome, Amanda Cole and Art Perez’s historic pinball collection. Allison Renshaw, an Encinitas-based artist, employs the excitement of movement and fragmentation on her large-scale canvases and intimate sized paintings. Los Angeles based artist COOP (Christopher Cooper), highlighted in the East Gallery, is among a group of second generation pop-surrealists working at the intersection of illustration and fine art –with a focus on SoCal hot rods, rock and roll, punk rock and the comic books associated with a “delinquent youth” counter-culture. The iconic posters of graphic designer John Van Hamersveld are on generous loan from private collections across southern California. This suite includes limited edition serigraphs Van Hamersveld made for The Endless Summer film (which celebrates its 50 year anniversary this summer), Jefferson Airplane, Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix and Blondie. MANA, a film featured in the south gallery, documents ten southern California artists who share the skill and affinity of surfing and how their interactions with the dynamics of the ocean inform their artwork. The artists of the film MANA are Craig “Skibs” Barker, Casper Brindle, Ben Brough, Alex Couwenberg, Ned Evans, Steve Fuchs, Eric Johnson, David Lloyd, Ken Pagliaro and Alex Weinstein. Spirit of Summer will only be on display until August 31, 2014, so don’t miss the opportunity to experience these talented artists’ celebration of the unmatched beauty of the southern California summer. From September 1 through September 12, 2014, MOAH will be going ‘dark’ as the summer show is uninstalled and the upcoming Hispanic Heritage Exhibition is prepared for its opening date of September 13. The Lancaster Museum of Art & History (MOAH) is located at 665 W. Lancaster BLVD in Lancaster, CA. Regular Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursday. The Museum is closed on Monday and Holidays. You can reach the museum at 661-723-6250.
