Last Saturday I spoke at Fossetcon in Orlando, giving my presentation How to get one of those awesome open source jobs. My audience was engaged, and I got a lot of good questions during and after. I normally enjoy spending quality time at the speakers dinner, doing the hallway track, attending some other sessions, and exploring the expo hall. Not this time. I flew a redeye from SEA to MCO, slept hard for a few hours at the hotel, walked to the presentation hall just before the organizers started to panic, gave my presentation, spent a very short time after, and then back to the airport to return to SEA. My total time from departing SEA to returning to SEA: 24.5 hours. I did get to watch Ruth Suehle give her presentation about the Rasberry Pi hardware board, and then said hello to some of the open source conference circuit regulars, including Deb Nicholson and David Stokes, and some of the other HP people who had attended and spoke, including Elizabeth Krumbach Joseph. Other fun parts of this trip: on the flight out I was seated next to the VP of Global Sales for [REACTED very very large tech company], who had spent time working at HP, so I got to learn some fun stories about the current and past c-level execs, and on the Uber ride from the hotel to the MCO airport, I was that Uber drivers very first passenger.
