Last Saturday it was movie night at our church, and they played the documentary Harvest of Empire: The Untold Story of Latinos in America by Juan Gonzalez, the co-host of Democracy Now. The film tracked the history of six different immigrant groups, from Mexico, Guatemala, San Salvador, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. It tracing how these immigrants have been influenced by the various U.S. economic and political policies towards those countries which caused them to want to flee their own countries. I think I have been sympathetic towards the struggles of Latino immigrants in this country because my uncle worked many years ago in Honduras, and the daughters of many of his friends of his came up to live with my grandmother whom they called abuelita. Some of them live here still today, have their own families, and I consider them as American as any other immigrant family, including our own which comes from mixed Irish and German heritage (hence I always go to the tavern on time).
