This Birth Doula Workshop has been approved as one step toward certification as a doula by DONA International and includes the following: Ø The significance of birth and the long term impact of the birth experience; Ø Specific suggestions for emotional and psychological support of the laboring woman and her partner; Ø Comfort measures and non-pharmacological pain management techniques; Ø The doula’s role before, during and after birth, and in special situations; Ø Communication skills and values clarification. Ø Discussion of ethics and standards of practice for the doula; Ø The business aspects of a doula practice; Ø DONA doula certification. Prerequisites for this course: 1. YOU MUST PURCHASE The Birth Partner, 4th Edition: a Complete Guide to Childbirth for Dads, Doulas and All Other Labor Companions by Simkin, 2013. BRING THIS BOOK TO THE WORKSHOP. I have a limited number of copies for purchase. 2. Read information about DONA International sent you to upon registration. 3. Review the process of labor of birth by reading one of the following books: Ø Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn: the Complete Guide, 4th Edition by Simkin, Bolding, Keppler, and Durham, 2010 Ø The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: an All-Canadian Guide to Conception, Birth and Everything in Between by Douglas, 2011 4. Briefly describe the births of your own children. If you have not given birth, please write a paragraph describing your experience with birth. Mail this in with your registration form. 5. Interview someone who gave birth more than 30 (even 40 or 50) years ago. Ask her to relate her experience (what happened and how she felt) and take notes of what she remembers most. 6. This workshop includes an Introduction to Childbirth for Doulas AT NO ADDITIONAL COST and meets the childbirth education requirement for DONA birth doula certification.
