Last evening was one of the most exciting and memorable in my life. Along with two lovely friends of mine, and our lovely children, I had the good fortune of attending the bewitching concert of the tabla virtuoso, composer, percussionist and actor, Ustad Zakir Hussain, accompanied by the legendary and one of the most highly respected Saraswathi Veena players, Smt. Jayanthi Kumaresh. My knowledge of Ustad was primarily, and shamefully, limited to the Taj Mahal tea bags advertisement … until yesterday. I knew, of course, that he is a very talented tabla player but, last evening, I got to see with my own eyes and hear with my own ears how talented that man is. I was amazed at how the tabla responded and obeyed to his fingers, how he played with them, how much he enjoyed enthralling the audience, making our hearts delightfully dance around his fingers that created an aura of magic leaving everyone in Chowdiah Hall breathless and spellbound. It was as if his nimble fingers were the celestial danseuses in the court of Lord Indra, dancing on the smooth stage evoking strange unfamiliar feelings and emotions in the hearts of the mesmerised gods, putting even Indra under a spell. Only an artist generously blessed can create such a hypnotising and cathartic experience. Smt. Jayanthi Kumaresh added to the enchantment with her grace, and heavenly music that flowed from her veena as her fingers caressed its strings. The instrument came alive on her lap where she held it, close to her heart, like a mother holding her child. Thank you, Ustad Zakir Hussain and Smt. Jayanthi Kumaresh, for an evening that will stay alive in my memory for the rest of my life; an evening of divine musical magnetism. Thank you, God, for this opportunity of a lifetime. Thank you Priyanka Mk and Tara Codavathi, for making this happen for us.
