Last month, the US Department of Commerce said it will investigate US complaints that Mexico sold subsidized sugar below cost in the US, in violation of international trade regulations. Phillip Hayes, spokesman for the American Sugar Alliance, says the next decision in the case is in the hands of the International Trade Commission. “They decide whether or not injury has been done. We are expecting something on or before May 12. It’ll be their preliminary finding of whether or not they believe there’s just cause to say injury has occurred. It’s impossible to say that no injury has occurred because of what Mexico did to prices here in the United States.” The decision could come as early as tomorrow.
