Last night I dreamed I had to audition for the role of Hamlet, downtown on Kingston’s main drag, outdoors in front of a crowd on some civic holiday. The director advised me to work up a lot of anger first, so I sulked around a nearby park, getting angry, and ran into Patricia Henderson and a certain student, and had to snarl at them both to leave me alone because talking to either of them always cheers me up. Then I realized I wasn’t sure of the lines, and wasn’t even sure which speech to do. So I borrowed a copy from the director, started leafing through it, and realized I was too angry to find any of the soliloquies. Then I woke up, grateful that I’m not an actor any more.
