Last night I had a good telephonic chat with Afriasiab Khan, my young friend from Peshawar. After the discussion I wanted to write an article about education but could not write one. Anyway I feel I must share the idea. The problem of education in our areas is mostly overburdened by ideological considerations. The religious people believe that considerable importance should be given to the teaching of Quran, Haiths and religious injunctions. There is a visible support for seminaries and informal religious teaching. The secular people, on the other hand, believe education to be a tool for social transformation and they think that by reforming the curriculum an end to religious politics can easily be made and the state can be made secular. I think what is missing is access, equity and quality in the existing public education system and a focus on productivity and pragmatism. Let’s suppose we make our educational institutions child-friendly with some decent facilities and a focus on the teaching of languages, math and science what may happen? Surely, literature, science and mathematics would produce skilled human resources who would be beneficial to themselves and the community. Similarly, those who study in seminaries may be forced to attend public education system because they are already having little opportunities for career development and understanding the world around them. Isnt it more useful to focus less on ideological considerations and work on making the education system more productive?
