Last night I watched To Be Takei, a 2014 documentary about George - TopicsExpress

Last night I watched To Be Takei, a 2014 documentary about George Takei. George was an original Star Trek cast who reinvented himself as a gay rights activist and social media darling on Facebook. What was less known (by myself at least) was his childhood years as a Japanese-American inside an internment camp in America during WWII, his role in a recent Broadway musical Allegiance, and his 28-year relationship with partner Brad Altman. Its hard to tell which aspect moved me most - for instance, bits of the Broadway play about Takeis father moved me to tears - but for my LGBT friends, Id recommend this documentary simply for Takeis husband Altman. Brad was a complete sweetheart, and had followed Takei on his busy tours of Comic Cons, award ceremonies and taken care of Takeis aging mother. They were funny together too - when they went to Yosemite to scatter Brads mothers ashes, the wind blew some of the ash back towards George and Brad. Later in the car, George said to Brad, you know, some of your mom is getting into the laundry too. We dont get many documentaries about gay spouses and their daily lives, and we dont get many role models in aspects of domestic togetherness. Most certainly we dont get a gay Asian being front and center in a movie. Brad and Georges love story is a good place to start. Dont miss it! https://youtube/watch?v=VUkA3RvwcWw
