Last night I worked my last shift at Doc Cheys. I had never had a restaurant job before, and felt pretty dang blessed when Ellie Feinroth put me in the ring to be interviewed for a hostess position. I was down on my luck and totally frightened for my survival. Doc Cheys is no joke: this is an environment for professionals!!! After my initial stage fright started to subside from the onslaught of parties all entering The House at once, and through the continual support and acknowledgement of the incredible management in this very special place of business, my confidence began to build. I remembered that I knew how to talk to people, how to connect, that simply acknowledging someone was all it took to let them know I hadnt forgotten them and that they were going to have a spot to eat soon. Over the course of 3 years I got to work in the microcosm of this fantastic community, to serve the public at large and to know what its like to respond to the next request offered up from the Universe in the way of can you get me another napkin?, empty water glasses needing to be filled, describing directions to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge, this table getting up instead of that one, and 1000s of other seemingly random needs to be met ... letting those requests be the only thing that set my agenda. I made so many friends, gave and got countless hugs, had intimate conversations, and realized that I really do have it in me to take my next personal and business steps. To all my loved ones at Doc Cheys thanks for all of your support, love, encouragement and for supporting my path. I love you.
