Last night, President Barack Obama made an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." When the subject turned to the new Russian law that targets LGBT people for harassment and discrimination, President Obama responded forcefully saying: "I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgender persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them." The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition applauds the President for taking such a strong stand against discrimination. Many people across this country have now started online petitions in their home towns urging Mayors and City Councils to cancel their Sister Cities relationships with Russian cities. At the present time, there is one is for Tennessee, Oak Ridge: petitions.moveon.org/sign/suspend-our-sister-city-6iy TTPC urges all Oak Ridge residents to sign the petition and tell your local government to end its relationship with governments that sanction bigotry towards LGBT people. If you do not live in Oak Ridge, alert all of your friends and contacts who do and urge them to sign.
