Last night (as ward Councillor) I was a guest at the induction of the new priest at St Barnabas Church . They have been without an incumbent vicar for quite a time, and the church has been kept going as a result of hard work by all the dedicated and enthusiastic parishioners. My Westbourne councillor colleague, Denise Cobb, attended in her Deputy Mayor capacity so we had prime seats at the front. The Church was full, with people coming from all over (including Florence where Father Lawrence previously ministered). The service was led by Dr Martin Walker, Bishop of Chichester. A special mention must go to the music performed by the Brighton Chamber Choir. Father Lawrence will also be priest in charge of St Andrews, the really busy church round the back of George St that is connected with St Andrews School. Its good news for this part of Hove that they now have a full time priest again. Bishop Martin made an impassioned plea for more young people to come forward to serve as a clergy during his address so obviously other parishes are not so fortunate. I must just mention St Barnabas itself. They are a very friendly bunch, and the interior of the Church is beautiful. Details of all the services can be found on their website stbarnabashove.co.uk And also I note the Brighton Chamber Choir will be giving a joint concert with a visiting French Choir at the church on Saturday 9 May (2 days after a certain election!).
