Last night at Free to Lead Inspiring Women to Leadership Conference, Pastor Leanne McAlister spoke about the social phenomenon known as Tall Poppy Syndrome and how as Canadians, especially as Canadian Women, we shirk at others rise up and shine their beauty and gifts for all the world to see, making commentary that they must think they are all that. So what do we do? Cut them down with this criticism rather then encouraging them to bloom on. As a result, people are afraid to grow and be their best selves for fear of how they will be perceived by others. This is such a tragedy and a loss of the super power of human capacity, talent and energy that can lead to radical, positive change. Like Marsha Wilson says, as she sat beside me as Leanne spoke, such as Aha moment.
