Last night, on News Channel 9, I asked a panel of experts a question concerning Common Core. I cited some research data that suggests reforming standards does not improve student performance. It suggests that rigor best comes through allowing teachers to practice their craft without excessive mandates. I simply asked, How is Common Core different? My expectation was an honest, thoughtful answer. Since then, I have had some good discussions but I have encountered more anger from folks who are upset that I asked the question. I was called stupid (kind of) and accused of having ulterior motives. Still, few want to consider the research and answer the question. So here are a few more questions. 1) Why would we EVER in education, reject information? 2) Does the challenge of opposing views not sharpen an argument? 3) Have we beaten each other up so bad that some of the most insightful voices no longer speak? Perhaps that is what I should have asked last night.
