Last night on Q&A, Joe Hockey said of the $7 Medicare contribution: “Its a payment. You can call it a tax. It comes out of a pocket. It comes out of someones pocket. A taxpayers pocket. You want to call it a tax, you can call it anything you want, you can call it a rabbit. Speaking with Paul Murray last year on Radio 6PR Perth, Abbott said: Look, Paul, I know it’s customary to be cynical about politicians but politicians should not say one thing before an election and do the opposite afterwards. I know that from time to time force majeure intervenes, but it is a terrible blow to trust in our polity when politicians break solemn commitments of this nature. The Prime Minister could not have been clearer before the election: “there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead” and this was in response to a statement that I had made over and over again that there would be a carbon tax if this government was re-elected. So, it was a premeditated, clear commitment that the Prime Minister made and she’s broken it and I think the Australian people are entitled to feel absolutely ripped off. We do Tony, and I suspect we wont forget.
