Last night on The 7.30 report on the ABC there was a piece on Protein Supplements and research that indicated that these supplements made from isolates, hydrolysates, concentrates, additives, flavours, preservatives, amino acids, some GMO ingredients, phyto-oestrogenic substances (female hormone) and other substances were something that was not necessarily good for adolescent boys. Many of these boys were taking these protein supplements without knowing the ingredients and whether they were all that effective. The advertising and marketing of these supplements shows pictures of very buff men, with well defined muscles. Its a billion dollar industry that is not regulated with regards to claims that can be made. I would advice all parents to start reading the ingredients of these supplements here is an example of a popular protein supplement Ingredients: High GMP Whey Protein Isolate, Hydrolysed Whey ProteinIsolate, Maize Maltodextrins, Fructose, Polydextrose, Vegetable Gums(407, 412, 415), Medium Chain Triglcerides, Flax Seed Oil, L-Carnitine,L- Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine, Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate,Glutamine Peptides, Soy Lecithin, Natural & Nature Identical flavours & colours, Sweeteners (950, 951), Minerals (PotassiumCitrate, Tri Calcium Phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Ferrous Fumarate, ZincSulphate, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite, Chromium Chloride),Vitamins (Vitamin C, Nicotinamide, Vitamin B6, Pantothenic Acid,Riboflavin, Niacin, Thiamin, Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3,Biotin, Vitamin B12). Changing Habits offers an alternative and its called Inca Inchi Protein - just one ingredient - the seed of the Inca Inchi.
