Last night the first Vancouver Art Commission presented a Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Austin Bartion! Previously a commercial artist, Barton turned to bronze sculpting nearly 30 years ago. His pieces, created in his home along the Lewis River, depict Wild West images of cowboys and horses, many from his own experience growing up in a pioneer family in eastern Oregon. In 2010, the Pendleton Roundup celebrated its 100th anniversary by commissioning Barton to create a bronze bucking horse that mirrors its famous logo. A U.S. Navy veteran, former barber, logger, milk hauler and dam builder, Barton cast his first bronze at age 56. His works stand in the city hall of Joseph, Ore., downtown Tumwater and galleries from Jackson Hole, Wyo. to Santa Fe, N.M. They are collected throughout the United States and abroad. youtube/watch?v=p_bG5dZDbQI
