Last night, the speech below was made at the Celina, Ohio local BOE meeting. Thank you Kathy Macwhinney, former teacher for standing up for our kids: Because of my research into the common core areas of mathematics and literature, I cannot be silent and have a clear conscience. Joseph Stalin, Russian Dictator, stated, “Education is a weapon whose effects depend on who holds it in his hand and at whom it is aimed.” Just who is holding our education? Is it “We the People” or some other entity? At whom is that education weapon aimed? That can be answered by Abraham Lincoln.“The philosophy of the classroom in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.” Just what is the philosophy of common core? Does anyone know? And if that philosophy is behind the training of our future citizens, what will America’s future hold? Thomas Jefferson said, “I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility over every form of tyranny over the minds of men.” So, I ask you to think about the following: When a set of national standards is forged by monetary bribery: Is it tyranny or liberty? When a mandated portion of a teacher’s evaluation is based upon student test scores and not her merit:Is that tyranny or liberty? When students are terrorized by maligned math exercises, test prepping, test taking, & failure:tyranny or liberty? When, in a common core 11th grade literature book, discussion of the Declaration of Independence focuses on the 27 charges against the leaders of England, why no study of the standard used to evalauate those leaders’ actions: The Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God. Why no discussion of America’s philosophical idea: that our rights come from God? Why no pursuit of the founders’ definition of the role of a government: to protect our God-given rights. All of these are found in the Declaration. Why censor these truths from 11th graders? Is that tyranny or liberty? When a common core handler says to a fifth grade teacher: “We don’t ever care what the kids’ opinions are. If they write what they think or put forth their opinion then they will fail the test...We want students to repeat the opinions of the ‘experts’ that we expose them to on the test.”:Is this tyranny or liberty? Do not take my word for it - research it for yourself. For some in the room there is a documentary you may want to consider. It can be found at: https://youtube/watch?v=uUMOWZc8PU8 I leave you with one final thought: We must be careful of what 30 pieces of silver might buy us.
