Last night we had a splendid experience, my husbands birthday, at Diemersdal Wine Estate. We do eat there regularly but yesterday was a Special Food and Wine pairing event. The Last breath of Winter. R450 per person including all wines. We were greeted warmly by the lovely staff and handed a cool glass of Sauvignon Blanc rose, 2014. Lovely accompanied by an attractive platter of Artisnal breads. The next course, an interesting combination of roasted rainbow carrots, orange, honeycomb and Fiore de Latte Mozzarella was a triumph of taste, texture and plating, accompanied by a 2014 Chardonnay, unwooded. not my best but the creaminess of the wine with the food combination was delightful. The Pan fried Langoustine course was heaven paired was an exceptional wine. The first ever appearance of a Grunerveldt liner, 2013. Diemersdal are the first to import this cultivar from Austria, sensational. Jerusalem Artichoke risotto so beautifully plated, with perfectly placed edible flowers, paired with a perfectly balancing Merlot 2013. Possibly my least favorite wine of all the wines but we do drink it often, so maybe my palate was in overdrive after the previous wine. The Assiette of Lamb paired with their 2012 Private collection. Superb. Finally, yes it is a long menu! Dark Chocolate platter, the plating of which would match any top restaurant in the world, was wonderful, small but sufficient. Altogether a very thoughtfully compiled Menu, by Chef Martin de Kock, who was a very visible presence, available to impart his passion of locally grown products and love of fine dining. One might think that this would all have been, too much, too rich perhaps. Mais non! The portions were so well judged. They were very generous with their precious wines. One of the finest meals we have enjoyed anywhere. This is a chef to watch out for. I almost do not want to post this as if it becomes too popular we may not be offered our favorite table.................. I suppose I should also mention their Sirloin Steak with French Fries and Bernaise sauce, usually on The Friday evening menu. Very highly recommended all round. Certainly keeping Durbanville on the Food Lovers map. Also wine list is very good value.
