Last nights first Seattle Symphony concert in New York was at Le Poisson Rouge, a multimedia arts and music venue in New York City. As we got into the cab, Dave Beck and I gave the address for the venue to the cabbie, who said, ah, so you are going to be young tonight. Well, I suppose that would be one way to put it. Le Poisson Rouge did feel rather hip, as exterior that was so swanky there was no name to be found anywhere outside, and there was a nattily dressed bouncer just inside the door. Down a flight of stairs to what surely must have been storage a few years back, we bumped into Maestro Morlot, just getting ready to go on stage, as the green room appeared to be the hallway. He promised us it would be a good show. The room is a bit smaller than the lobby of Benaroya Hall, though the ceilings are much lower, and though nobody was smoking, it had that look. The stage was filled with instruments, a grand piano, cymbals, two turntables for a piece by John Cage, car brake drums, and the like. The rest of the room was absolutely packed with a broad demographic, 25 to 80 year olds, all having the times of their lives. Ill leave the concert itself for Dave Beck to report on, but Ill just say THIS is a great way to do concerts. The beautiful piano music of Debussy that kicked things off went wonderfully with the soft clinking of wine glasses, the art projected on the stage behind the performer, and the general excitement in the room. It worked as well for the rather challenging and unique work by Cage as it did for the Debussy. Great music, great art, great setting, and a totally excited audience. THIS, I say again, is a great way to hear classical music. Its the next morning now, and Dave Beck and I are set to go to Carnegie Hall for the Symphonys rehearsal, then at 5pm Seattle Time, our pre-broadcast on KING FM. Join us at 5, then stay with us for the concert at 8pm! -Bryan Lowe
