Last nights meet the candidates meeting went well enough. There was someone who questioned my relationship with the Teachers Union. Even though I am a teacher I am not a member of a Union at this time. I will say that because I am a teacher I understand the challenges that teachers face. For many years there have been more and more unfunded mandates that do little more than heap responsibilities on teachers, yet provide no resources to accomplish the mandate. I remember hearing a representative from CDE describe the situation very well. Politicians and the public demand a Cadillac education on a Yugo budget. My conservative nature tells me that is unsustainable. Either reduce the demands on teachers or provide more resources. Thats one of the many ways to improve education.
