Last nights troubled flirtation flick on Netflix Streaming: MY WEEK WITH MARILYN (2011). Allegedly true story of stone movie buff who gets a job as third assistant director on a film, and becomes Marilyn Monroes confidante and safe play toy during that week. It doesnt amount to a hell of a lot beyond the revelation that Monroe was seriously broken, and that a randy young man will drop a perfectly nice and attractive girlfriend, herself with movie star looks as shes played by Emma Watson, in order to let a movie star give him blue balls for a week, but beyond that a fine character study. And what a cast! Eddie Redmayne plays the guy, Michelle Williams (Oscar nominated for this role) is terrific as Marilyn, Kenneth Branagh plays Laurence Olivier, Julia Ormond plays Vivian Leigh, and past that we have Watson, Judi Dench, Dougray Scott, Derek Jacobi, and Dominic Cooper. I thought I spotted Malcolm McDowell in a cameo, but I appear to have been wrong about that. Okay enough, and the conflict between Oliviers traditional acting skills and the method practiced by Monroe -- a clash of worlds that would cause the great man even more aggravation when he was later matched with Dustin Hoffman -- is hilarious.
