Last spring I won the lottery to run the Marine Corp Marathon for the second time. About a month later my son was diagnosed with cancer and I knew I wouldnt be able to commit time to the training while he was going through his pretty grueling treatment schedule. The marathon I didnt run was this morning. I spent the first half of my 4 mile run beating myself up. The mantra went something like this I could be running the marathon this morning if only I was better, if only I was stronger. If I had been more dedicated I could have trained for the marathon while Sully was in treatment. I suck. And then I thought about Elizabeth Shuman, smiling on the treadmill while running a mile, happily starting over yet again. And I realized I was thinking about it wrong. Its ok to start over, and over, and over if you have to. So I decided to be happy about the miles I could run and not beat myself about the miles I wasnt running. So next year, I will be at Marine Corp, with an L on my back and a smile on my face. This morning I ran 4 miles, Im leaving it up to the Outrunners to run the last 22.2 for me today.
