Last time I saw The National was two years ago (Dec 2011) in San Francisco, and after that gig, I remember thinking, Man, theyve really reached their peak. I wonder if this will be their last big album/tour. Apparently the band had intended to take time off to focus on family, but in doing so, this lead (almost by accident) to a new album. “We intended to take a long break — I have a four-year-old, Aaron has a baby, Brian has two — and what happened was because we took all the pressure off and all the deadlines away, we tricked ourselves and songs started being born organically,” says Berninger. Their newest album (#6), Trouble Will Find Me, is another masterpiece from a band that only gets better with age. Seeing them last week in London for their Trouble Will Find Me tour was one of the most cathartic (mental, emotion, visceral) episodes in all of my gig history. A TWO HOUR set list that proves the TIMELESSNESS of every song performed. After it was all over, the middle-aged woman standing next to me (eyes welled up with an onslaught of tears) turns to her husband and says, I need a hug. She was not the only one. xxx London (Nov 13) setlist: Dont Swallow the Cap I Should Live in Salt Mistaken for Strangers Bloodbuzz Ohio Demons Sea of Love Afraid of Everyone Hard to Find This Is the Last Time I Need My Girl Squalor Victoria Conversation 16 Available Cardinal Song Slow Show Apartment Story Pink Rabbits England Graceless About Today Fake Empire Lean Humiliation Mr. November Terrible Love Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks
