Last week (7-15 September), Ms. Amanda Simpson, EITF, and I have been in the Pacific region (Hawaii and Kwajalein Atoll.) In Hawaii, we visited Schofield Barracks and looked at some of their renewable energy initiatives. I attended the Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit and was the keynote speaker along with Gov. Abercrombie. This engagement helped solidify the Army’s dedication to the project as we attempt to gain the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission’s endorsement for the 52 MW biodiesel fired plant. I had the opportunity to evaluate progress and the way ahead on the Army’s environmental equities at the Pohaculoa Training Area. Before returning to Washington DC, I validated the existing condition of infrastructure on Kwajalein Atoll with special emphasis on the pier project for FY14. I examined the conditions at the failing hospital facility and determined the urgency for MILCON replacement or repair and conducted a holistic assessment of costs associated with transitioning the facilities from an Army Material Command contractor operated installation to Installation Management Command.
