Last week a hero walked into our Pantry although he vehemently stresses his actions were not heroic. This client, who prefers to remain Anonymous, is a retired Navy SEAL who was awarded a Purple Heart after sustaining a serious spinal injury in Vietnam. Anonymous was an orphan who ran away from his foster home in order to volunteer for two tours in Vietnam. During these tours, Anonymous infiltrated two Prison of War camps, freed several of his fellow soldiers and became a POW himself. He went to great lengths to sacrifice himself in order to keep others safe but he claims, “I’m not a hero. The heroes are the ones in the bags. The one’s who didn’t make it home.” He refuses to take credit for his actions insisting that the dead be remembered instead. Even though he is really struggling now because of an inability to work, he stresses that once he gets back on his feet he will repay our Pantry for everything we have given him. He won’t accept that we are more than happy to help him especially after his sacrifices overseas. This man worked hard his entire life and just can’t make ends meet anymore. We are so incredibly glad that Anonymous found his way to our Pantry. It’s our turn to take care of him after everything he has done for our country. A simple thank you will never suffice.
