Last week, an expedition team consisting of four dedicated explorers entered Wind Cave on a multi-day excursion, traveling to the very edges of the cave, and beyond, to the most remote parts of Wind Cave. Check out the attached map: it took a full day to get down to Camp Cosmos, the established primitive campsite where the cavers spent their nights. Survey and research took place in the area off The Deep End (and off the bottom of the map!). Pictured with this post is everything a caver needs to survive in the cave for a few days; but, considering the small, maze-like passageways that Wind Cave is known for, it is so important to keep it light, and keep it small. And of course, everything we bring in, we have to bring out. Also pictured is the water collection site that is located near Camp Cosmos, allowing cavers the safety and convenience of not having to bring in water for the entire trip. Camp itself is located in a low, narrow passage with an area to drop off dirty clothes and equipment before entering the pictured sleeping/cooking area. This was only the fourth overnight trip to the Cosmos, and the second to go all the way to the Deep End. What did our explorers find in this remote wilderness? Tune in next week to find out... (ka)
