Last week saw the launch of two very important initiatives to tackle racism in our community. On Tuesday I joined Australian Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane for the Canberra launch of the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Racism - #ItStopsWithMe campaign. One in seven Australians reported that they had experienced discrimination because of the colour or their background in the past year, a figure that has been increasing steadily in recent years according to the AHRC. The campaign calls on Australians to reflect on what they can do to counter racism whenever they encounter it. The itstopswithme.humanrights.org.au website provides a wonderful set of resources to help schools, community groups, businesses and sporting clubs combat discrimination and prejudice. Nova Peris : Labor Senator for the Northern Territory also launched beyondblues Think.Stop.Reflect campaign to highlight how subtle or casual racism can be just as harmful as more overt forms, leading to anxiety and depression in Indigenous Australians. #StopThinkRespect encourages everyone in Australia to check their behaviour.
