PRESS RELEASE: PH Legislators for climate action welcomes EU Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard GLOBE Philippines, the national chapter of the Global Legislators Organisation (GLOBE International), welcomes the official visit of EU Commissioner for Climate Change Action Connie Hedegaard on September 6 in Manila. According to the director of GLOBE Philippines Chris Estallo, “Hedegaard’s engagement with key legislators of GLOBE Philippines affirms the critical role of parliamentarians in climate action both in the domestic and international spheres.” Hedegaard had successful engagements with the GLOBE chapter in the European Union. One of the recent ones is the Experts Meeting on European Fuel Quality Directive, which aims to reduce EU’s carbon emissions from transport by six per cent, with intermediate indicative targets of two per cent by 2014 and four percent by 2017. He added, “Given the EU and EU member states’ huge portfolio of climate and energy programmes in the country, GLOBE Philippines through its legislator members, is keen to explore further co-operation with the EU to work together towards an ambitious future climate regime by 2015.” GLOBE Philippines is set to have its inaugural meeting this month and organizational launching in October. To date, legislators who have expressed support to be part of GLOBE Philippines include Senators Loren Legarda, Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, Sonny Angara, Sony Trillanes, Greg Honasan; and House Representatives Walden Bello and Ibarra Gutierrez of Akbayan Party list, Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan De Oro City, Agapito Guanlao of BUTIL Party list, Sherwin Gatchalian of Vaenzuela City, Mel Sarmiento of Samar, Mark Leandro Mendoza of Batangas, Leni Robredo of Camarines Sur, Emmeline Aglipay of DIWA Party list, and Susan Yap of Tarlac. “The next two years will be critical to raise our collective ambition to urgently address the challenge of keeping the global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius. The 16th Congress is in the position to significantly shape a climate legacy for a better future,” concluded Estallo.
