Last week saw the wildlife and biodiversity technical staff from WCS and WWF meet in Sen Monorom to design the landscape-level fecal DNA survey on Asian elephants that will be conducted this coming dry season. The survey will take place in Seima Protection Forest, Mondulkiri Protected Forest, and Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary and will take roughly 4 months to complete. The method being used in called capture-recapture, and relies on individually identifying elephants using DNA extracted from dung samples. The survey design is now complete, and the intensive training for the field teams will take place this week - more updates to come!
