Last week the Department of Conservation held a series of meetings as part of establishing the Mauis Dolphins Research Advisory Group. They met with fishing industry heavies, academics/scientists, Councils, Iwi, and NGOs such as ours. We were joined in our session by Sea Shepherd New Zealand, Environmental Defence Society, Forest & Bird and WWF. We all basically agreed that the meetings are somewhat limited in value because the Ministry of Primary Industries arent taking part so theres no way to address fishery impacts - the dolphins main threats. But we remain committed to taking part cos well do what ever it takes to help Mauis & Hectors dolphins
