Last week the German art group Rimini Protokoll came to test run their new acoustic walk across the city: ‘Remote St Petersburg’ which will be a part of the MANIFESTA 10 public program this summer. 50 strangers gathered at the Alexander Nevsky graveyard near the city centre. They donned headphones and awaited instructions. The collective group – which form the ‘horde’ explored pre-selected routes of the city, trusting implicitly in the synthetic voice they were obeying. Binaural recordings and film scores turn the cityscape into a personal film; artificial Intelligence explores unknown territories, mustering human activity from a remote perspective. Each new part of the route provided a colourful backdrop for dictated individual or collective action, often surprising the unknowing pedestrians who’d encounter these actions. From bending down to tie shoes en mass in the metro to sprinting down shopping malls - to raising arms clutching hand-bag possessions in a make-believe protest down the back streets of a market. Remote Petersburg is commissioned by the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater and is scheduled for end of July - beginning of August
