Last weekend there were four big events in the Basque Country which mobilised thousands of people. On Saturday a large crowd filled the streets of Eibar in favor of the release of pro-independence leader Arnaldo Otegi and his four comrades who have been imprisoned for five years now for their political work. Among those who took part in the demonstration there were members of different political parties, trade unions and social organizations. The march also had some international support like that of the Peace Nobel Price Fernando Esquivel. Thousands of teachers, students, parents and citizens in general marched in the four Basque southern provincial capitals to protest against the latest Spanish education reform (LOMCE) and to demand a Basque national education system which will respect Basque language and culture and will be based in progressive values. Hundreds also gathered to support Urtzi and Telle, two young activists who were recently sentenced to two and a half years in prison accused of doing some graffiti during the last general strike. The pair had been underground to denounce and desobey the unfair sentence and appeared at the support gathering only to be arrested and imprisoned later.
