Last year, David Oliver, a well-known magician from Weymouth, needed life-saving support while he waited for a double lung transplant. Under the care of Dr. Jose Garcia, a cardiac surgeon in the Institute for Heart, Vascular and Stroke Care and the Mass General Transplant Center, David was placed on ambulatory extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a machine that oxygenates and removes carbon dioxide from the blood outside a patient’s body. Unlike traditional ECMOs, ambulatory ECMOs used at Mass General allow patients to get up, walk around and even begin rehabilitation while they wait for an organ to become available.
