Last year I had a student who was keying improperly, only using one of his hands. It wasnt keyboarding class, but we were on the keyboard constantly in computer tech so its something we cover. Before I got after him too bad I noticed that he was holding his other hand off to the side kind of at an odd angle. I watched closer and clearly he had some sort of palsy situation that also affected the way he held his spine and used his legs. Without him knowing about it I started looking into keyboards for diverse abilities and only found a one handed keyboard (that was affordable) that was intended for gaming more than anything, so not every key was on it. I then bought a manual and some CDs that taught how to type one handed on a traditional keyboard. It was fun to give him the manual and cds, he was touched that someone would do that for him. He gave them back to me at the end of the year with a hearty thank you. I just got an email asking for my school mailing address. Somewhere in my search last year I caught someones attention. They are mailing me a real one handed keyboard! I asked who and why was donating it. They said that they were no one specific, just happy to help a teacher who was willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to help a student. The keyboard should be here next week, and I am looking forward to giving it to last years student. Hes going to be so surprised! Have I mentioned that I love my job? Have I mentioned that the world is still full of great people?
