Last year I learned about the Dragon Triangle which stretches from Japan to the Philippines and extends east to Kiribati. All types of ships, including research vessels have been lost in these waters. Why? Aside from the ocean depth, live underwater volcanoes, three-sided waves, no one really knows. There have been so few SOS calls. Last week while visiting Sandy Library I found the book "Fatal Voyage" which describes what happened to the USS Indianapolis..the ship that carried the components of the atomic bomb from Pearl Harbor to Tinian, an island country near Guam. This August the Oregonian ran an article about a few of the survivors. Out of l,l97 men only 880 were rescued. It is a fascinating read. Incidentally, Kiribati is in the process of find a place to move. Seems the melting Arctic is covering their home...alittle like the Netherlands and Venice.
