Last year, President Obama justified his attempted bombing of Syria by arguing that “for nearly seven decades, the United States has been the anchor of global security.” He urged the U.S. public to recognize that “the burdens of leadership are often heavy, but the world is a better place because we have borne them.” As the president now attempts to initiate drone-bombings in Iraq without Congressional approval (j.mp/1qyCpDf), it’s worth revisiting the experience of one of the many grateful beneficiaries of U.S. global leadership. Fifty years ago this month, Laos became the target of what would amount to 2.5 million tons of U.S. bombs—more than what the U.S. dropped on Germany and Japan during World War II. #throwbackthursday
