Late Flowering Glory at Hole Park Gardens Hole Park Gardens in Rolvenden, Kent are open on Wednesday and Thursdays until the end of October for visitors to enjoy the 15 acre gardens including the impressive exotic border which is full of vibrant colours at this time of year. Another feature in the gardens is the newly renovated sundial garden which has been planted to give a long flowering season with a white, purple and blue theme starting in spring with epimediums, amsonia, salvias and veronica castrums followed by David Austin roses, nepeta, buddleja alternafolia and Pearl de Azure clematis with late flowering fuscias into the autumn. The planting frames the attractive mosaic path leading to the central sundial and the quirky yew window with views across the countryside. The late flowering agapanthus ‘Hole Park Blue’, which is unique to Hole Park, will also be putting on a beautiful display throughout the gardens in September and October. Head Gardener Quentin Stark describes the exotic border as being: “Full of dahlias, cannas and salvias including salvia africana (blue), salvia curviflora (bright pink), salvia darcyi (bright red) backed by a rich tapestry of foliage including banana plants, grasses and gingers. The border also has plenty of sun loving plants including agave with scented polygoniums and pink, orange, red and yellow gazanias. There are spiny tropical solanums, one from Madagascar and an impressive six foot busy lizzie from the Ethiopian highlands with big pure white flowers.” After enjoying the tropical border take a walk through the extensive grounds and gardens and visit the renovated Ice House, a 1740’s construction which was used to store ice long before the days of refrigeration. When the ice was cut and stacked it would last for up to three years in this cool environment. Visitors can view the Ice House from the Woodland Walk. Enjoy afternoon tea with homemade cakes in the coach house tea rooms where there is a plant stall selling a varied selection of plants to take home. Jam, preserves and apple juice made at Hole Park are also available. The gardens are open to visitors in the summer and autumn months until 31 October on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 11am and 6pm and also for Autumn Sundays on 6, 13, 20 and 27 October 2013. discoverthegardenofengland/things-to-do/hole-park-gardens-p218841
