Lately, I’ve been getting quite a few comments on the pictures I post of the artwork people make when I’m modeling…And I have often heard things like “the face is wrong”, or “you look so much better than this”, and even “so ugly” (yes, someone had the guts to comment “so ugly” on a picture of a portrait). Just for clarification purposes: many of these artists aren’t professional. Most of them are paying to be there and have me pose for them. Many of them are just now starting out, and even those that have been at it for a while may still be learning. Drawing and painting is HARD. And even if you can do a much better job at it than they can, keep in mind that when you make a comment like that, you are criticizing the work of a person you don’t even know. Someone who has invested many hours and a lot of effort into their art. Any portrait done with feeling, as Oscar Wilde said, is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter. That means that those artists aren’t painting ME, they are painting themselves THROUGH me - and the intimacy and personality in a work of art are the most beautiful thing about it. So next time you see a portrait of me that doesn’t quite look like me, keep that in mind and appreciate the fact that someone stripped their soul like that on a canvas or paper. (:
