Lateral Epincondylitis or Better Known as Tennis Elbow. You might be surprised to learn that 45 percent of tennis players suffer from tennis elbow, or Lateral Epicondylitis. Of course, others besides tennis players can experience the condition, so its important to recognize and diagnose the condition as soon as possible so that it can be treated. Chiropractic can be an effective method of treating tennis elbow. Tennis elbow also known as Lateral Epicondylitis is the #1 ailment of the upper body. 45% of daily tennis players suffer from tennis elbow. But you do not have to be a tennis player to experience lateral epicondylitis. Tennis elbow is caused by excessive strain in the muscles of the forearm (wrist extensor group) which is commonly seen in tennis players, carpenters, secretaries, manual labourers and many more professions. So basically any activity that involves repetitive wrist extension will cause tennis elbow. In 9 out of 10 cases of tennis elbow, there is localized pain in the tendo periosteal junction where the common extensor tendon originates (outer aspect of the elbow). In some patients with tennis elbow, they may experience radiating pain to the back of the forearm and wrist area. The problem with tennis elbow is that it takes a long time to heal due to the lack of a tendon sheath. The common extensor origin is more muscle like than tendon like, except that it has a very poor blood supply and is not benefited by the fluid nutrition that is found within a tendon sheath. Your Chiropractor will perform a thorough history and examination including orthopaedic and neurological testing to determine the extent of your tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis). Then they will develop a specific plan of management tailored to your case. In some cases it may be beneficial to use diagnostic ultrasound to scan the elbow so that a more accurate diagnosis can be made before treatment can begin.
