Laterally corrected quarter-plate daguerreotype copy of daguerreotypes of the Theology Class at Oberlin College, ca. 1852. The daguerreotype on the left of the middle row is John Mercer Langston. Langston was born on December 14, 1829, in Louisa County, Virginia. He graduated from Oberlin in 1849 and then received a Masters Degree in 1853. In 1854, Langston became the first African-American lawyer in Ohio. In 1888, he became the first African American to win a congressional election in the state of Virginia, having run as a Republican candidate for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Langston served in Congress from 1890 to 1891. He died in Washington, D.C., in 1897. This is part of a group of Oberlin dags I purchased at a militaria show a couple of years ago. For more on Langston and a copy of his original dag portrait, see: oberlin.edu/external/EOG/OYTT-images/JMLangston.html
