Latest advisory: Tropical Storm Chantal’s storm tract has shifted more westerly and that puts the storm tract in the center of Florida’s southern tip. The good news is that due to the upper level low in the Gulf and the high altitude wind shearing, along with the extremely dry air, Chantal is rapidly losing strength and is now only at 45 mph and showing a forward speed of 29 mph west bound. As Chantal passes Haiti en route to Cuba, the storm is expected to experience further weakening to around 30 mph as it passes over Cuba at 8pm on Thursday. If Chantal stays on it projected tract and remains in the center of the cone, it will cross the Florida coast at the southern tip around 0200 on Friday, with only 30 mph winds. This would allow Chantal to pass MIA to the west in the Everglades around 0400 on Friday with 30 mph winds, not unlike a Florida summer thunderstorm. The newest projections does not show any wind speed above 30 mph after it passes north of Cuba.
